FURNITURE BUYING INDEX UP TWO POINTS

--Furniture Buying Index gives retailers momentum for President’s Day Weekend --

Charleston, SC February 1, 2004 – The Furniture Buying Index is up two points this month to a reading of 90. The Furniture Buying Index gives retailers a great outlook for the upcoming President’s Day Weekend sales.

Britt Beemer, Chairman of America’s Research Group, said, “Consumers had a great deal of momentum at the beginning of January, and that momentum has continued.” Beemer continued, “Finally America is moving out of this downward economic turn that we have experienced since 2001.”

Beemer added, “As America comes out of this under performing economy, furniture retailers are on the rebound. This gives retailers great support for President’s Day Weekend sales.”

The Furniture Buying Index is compiled each month by America's Research Group from interviews with 5,000-8,000 consumers across the country. In a typical month, 80 percent of the consumers interviewed can name a specific furniture item they intend to buy. The Index's mark signifies what percent of the benchmark 80% actually have a particular item in mind.

Britt Beemer is chairman of America's Research Group, a full-service consumer behavior research company based in Charleston, SC. ARG provides research and strategic planning services to leading manufacturers and retailers of consumer goods across North America.
