--Furniture Buying Index drops one point, but is still extremely strong --

Charleston, SC October 1, 2003 – The Furniture Buying Index is down one point this month to a reading of 86. This downward fall is not detrimental to the Furniture Buying Index in that the Index is still strong.

Britt Beemer, Chairman of America’s Research Group, said, “I am disappointed that the Furniture Buying Index has not continued its upward clime.” Beemer continues, “but one point is not drastic considering how strong the Index was before the one point drop and how strong it still remains after the drop this month.”

Beemer added, “The Furniture Buying Index is still strong which indicates a strong fall sales season for furniture retailers.”

The Furniture Buying Index is compiled each month by America's Research Group from interviews with 5,000-8,000 consumers across the country. In a typical month, 80 percent of the consumers interviewed can name a specific furniture item they intend to buy. The Index's mark signifies what percent of the benchmark 80% actually have a particular item in mind.
